The Challenge

The “uncarpeted” enterprise — warehouses, manufacturing floors, oil rigs, ports, stadiums — represents an underserved network footprint larger than traditional office space by several orders of magnitude. Ramen faced three core challenges in building a Network-as-a-Service platform for these environments.

Resilience. The system must deliver rugged, reliable wireless networks in harsh weather, challenging spectrum interference, and unique physical demands. Each transaction failure due to network unavailability puts the entire operation at risk.

Scale. These environments are primarily device-driven — industrial IoT networks that scale faster and less predictably than traditional enterprise user bases.

Automation. NaaS customers expect the provider to detect and fix network issues before they cause impact — across globally distributed locations, each a unique wireless environment.

Why Akka

“It’s difficult to understate how challenging it is to deliver SLA-backed wireless connectivity via a cloud-based model across such a diversity of global locations, challenging wireless environments, and myriad device types, all of which continue to grow and change daily,” says Partho Mishra, Co-founder and CEO. “Akka has been critical to enabling our team to scale globally while also keeping our customers happy.”

Ramen uses Akka for its Cloud Orchestrator — a SOC 2-compliant platform with over 100 microservices covering management, monitoring, telemetry, alerting, AI models, and controllers for 4G/LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, and IoT. Akka’s streaming capabilities enable real-time telemetry processing, while the actor model provides the concurrency needed to manage tens of thousands of devices simultaneously.

The Results

Speed to production. Over 100 microservices quickly built on Akka, covering every aspect of network management from telemetry to AI-driven anomaly detection — the platform continuously learns from each deployment, adding data elements and growing more intelligent over time.

Scale. Tens of thousands of users and IoT devices managed simultaneously, with SLA-backed connectivity in remote, large outdoor areas.

Cost to operate. Separation of concerns, data transformation, and network scaling are handled by Akka — letting Ramen’s team focus on network intelligence functionality rather than infrastructure plumbing.

Business impact. SLA-backed NaaS delivered across warehouses, oil rigs, ports, and stadiums worldwide creates a unique solution only Ramen is able to deliver to its customers.

The Agentic Opportunity

Network management in harsh environments is inherently agentic: each deployment site needs autonomous monitoring, anomaly detection, and remediation without waiting for human intervention. On the Akka Agentic AI Platform, each deployment site becomes a governed agent that monitors its wireless environment, detects spectrum interference and hardware degradation, and applies remediation in real time.

These network agents can coordinate across Ramen’s global footprint — sharing learned patterns from one oil rig that apply to another, optimizing spectrum allocation across co-located sites, and escalating only the issues that truly require human expertise. With durable state and event sourcing, every network decision and remediation action is auditable for SLA compliance. Enterprises build on the Akka Agentic AI Platform directly, or have a system delivered and operated through Akka Specify.
