Klubraum built its event organizing platform on Akka to serve 200K+ users across 10,000+ groups — delivering 10–12 interrelated services per user with 99.9999% availability, all without outside funding.

Akka ROI Scorecard

Speed to Production

10–12

interrelated microservices per user — timelines, calendars, chat, surveys, and event streaming.

Cost to Operate

99.9999%

availability for real-time responsiveness — with automatic failure recovery.

Scale

200K+

users across 10,000+ groups, adding thousands of new users per month.

Business outcome: enterprise-class results from a bootstrapped startup team with no outside funding.

The Challenge

With a small development team and no outside funding, Klubraum needed to build a world-class event organizing app that could securely manage complex sets of diverse data in real time — calendars, chat, surveys, event streaming — while scaling reliably as the user base grew.

The team initially considered Java and Springboot but needed a platform that could deliver enterprise-class scalability while abstracting the complexity of building 10–12 interrelated microservices per user.

Why Akka

“Akka allows us to punch above our weight since performance and reliability are already built into the platform,” says Steffen Haak, Founder and CEO.

Akka simplified safe concurrency without locks — critical when the app has limited slots for a sporting event and two concurrent users can’t overwrite one another. Automatic failure recovery saves on operational costs, and horizontal scalability across clusters handles load spikes as groups organize events.

The team leverages Cassandra and Kubernetes alongside Akka, delivering a complex set of interrelated services that complement each other and provide a reliable, responsive experience.

The Results

Speed to production. A small bootstrapped team delivered enterprise-class functionality — 10–12 interrelated services per user including timelines, calendars, chat, surveys, and event streaming.

Scale. 200K+ users across 10,000+ groups, adding thousands of new users monthly.

Cost to operate. 99.9999% availability with automatic failure recovery, eliminating the need for a dedicated operations team.

Business impact. Enterprise-class results without enterprise-class funding — hundreds of thousands of users served daily with rapid growth.

The Agentic Opportunity

Event management is inherently agentic: each event needs autonomous scheduling, participant management, capacity enforcement, and real-time coordination. On the Akka Agentic AI Platform, each event becomes a governed agent that manages its lifecycle — promoting to the right members, enforcing capacity limits, sending reminders, and handling waitlists automatically.

These event agents can coordinate across groups, detecting scheduling conflicts, suggesting optimal times based on member availability patterns, and adapting communication preferences per user. With durable state and event sourcing, every event decision is auditable. Enterprises build on the Akka Agentic AI Platform directly, or have a system delivered and operated through Akka Specify.
