Giist Social builds a healthier social media platform

How a small team launched a bot-free social platform with zero infrastructure complexity.

Industry · Technology & Social Media

Giist Social built a new kind of social media platform on Akka — bot-free, troll-resistant, and fully distributed — with a tiny team that focused entirely on the product while Akka handled the infrastructure.

Business outcome: a live social platform with real-time search, user-controlled feeds, and zero bot interference.

The Challenge

Social media has become synonymous with toxic interactions, bot networks, and algorithm-driven content that users can’t control. Mauricio Aristizabal, Founder and CEO, set out to build a platform where users engage with real people — not bots — and curate their own content experience.

The technical challenge: build a massively scalable, fully distributed social platform with powerful real-time search, user-controlled feeds, and bot-resistant membership — all with a very small team and limited funding. Speed to market was critical, but quality and scalability couldn’t be compromised.

Why Akka

“I was so happy when I came across Akka — these guys have figured it all out,” says Aristizabal. “In terms of what Akka offered and the whole zero maintenance concept, it seemed super compelling.”

Akka removed all infrastructure complexity. The team focused entirely on building product features — multidimensional search, coin-based interaction models, embargoed content communities — while Akka handled distribution, scaling, and fault tolerance automatically.

“Akka removed all of the infrastructure complexity for us. Except for reviewing logs, I haven’t had to interact with GCP at all,” says Aristizabal.

faster to market — a tiny team shipped a production social platform without hiring infrastructure engineers.

The Results

Speed to production. A small team built and shipped a production social platform in half the time it would have taken without Akka. “Without Akka, I would have needed to hire more people and it probably would have taken twice as long,” says Aristizabal.

Scale. Fully distributed architecture with no single points of failure, designed to grow as the user base expands.

Cost to operate. Zero infrastructure management. Deployment was seamless and the team has never had to manage cloud infrastructure directly.

Business impact. A live, differentiated social platform where users control their content experience, free from bots and algorithmic manipulation.

The Agentic Opportunity

Content moderation and community health are natural fits for agentic AI. On the Akka Agentic AI Platform, each community within Giist Social could become a governed agent that monitors interaction patterns, detects bot-like behavior, manages coin economies, and enforces community standards autonomously.

These community agents can learn from engagement patterns across the platform, surface emerging issues before they escalate, and adapt moderation policies in real time — all with full auditability. Enterprises build on the Akka Agentic AI Platform directly, or have a system delivered and operated through Akka Specify.
