The Challenge

Amazon eero's founders were certain the traditional single-router model was not the future of home WiFi. To deliver reliable coverage and consistent performance for many connected devices throughout a home, the company built a distributed mesh of WiFi access points together with a cloud interface to monitor and manage the entire network. That cloud backend had to be fast and reliable, offering sub-second response times and always-on availability.

A traditional web architecture would not scale for the workload. The database becomes the shared memory of a vastly concurrent system, and as the system grows into many request servers, async workers, and caches, different parts hold different representations of the same data. As John Lynn, Cloud Platform Manager at eero, put it, "As data moves throughout your systems, consistency is harder and harder to maintain." eero needed to model a growing, complex domain and handle concurrency across many homes at once.

Amazon eero standardized on Akka for high-concurrency, distributed, resilient communication between customer device endpoints, the eero backend, and the eero cloud. The platform holds durable in-memory state instead of routing every read and write through a shared database, giving high-performance messaging between devices and cloud even when individual devices are offline or unreachable.

Each user's network and each node is modeled as its own independent unit, so eero orchestrates complex network-management tasks — including pushing firmware updates to individual devices — without central bottlenecks.
