How India's largest sports entertainment streaming platform eliminated peak-traffic failures and cut cloud costs 30%.
Dream11 replaced its failing contest infrastructure with Akka and achieved 30,000 user joins per second at 150ms latency — launching a full month ahead of schedule, reducing cloud costs by 30%, and growing from 1 million to more than 250 million users.

Business outcome: 250M+ users served reliably through India’s peak sporting events.
Dream11 experienced explosive growth — from 1 million users at launch in 2014 to more than 250 million, with up to 15M MAUs. The platform generates massive traffic spikes in the hour before real-world sporting events, with tens of thousands of users per second requesting to join contests.
The original architecture couldn’t keep up: users were unable to register or were kicked out mid-process. Contests that exceeded participant limits had to be cancelled entirely — with refunds issued to every participant. With a three-month deadline before the Indian Premier League season, failure to launch on time would result in significant revenue loss.
After extensive analysis, Dream11 concluded that Akka’s reactive architecture could deliver the elastic scalability and self-healing resilience they needed. Akka removed the back-end complexity of managing concurrency at scale, letting the team focus on business logic.
“Akka could deliver the scalability and resiliency required to handle our current number of participants and expected growth,” says Mahesh Jadhav, Software Architect at Dream11.
Dream11 also takes advantage of Akka for real-time identification of performance bottlenecks, enabling the kind of fine-tuning that’s only possible with production-quality monitoring.
Speed to production. Launched one full month ahead of the Indian Premier League deadline. After minor adjustments by dedicated Akka engineers, performance exceeded targets within a week.
Scale. Over 30,000 user joins per second at 150ms latency — handling multiple overlapping sporting events simultaneously.
Cost to operate. Cloud infrastructure costs reduced by 30%. Resources scale up for peak events and back down when demand subsides.
Business impact. Over 250 million users served through India’s highest-traffic sporting events with zero contest cancellations due to infrastructure failures.
Dream11’s contest management — automatic generation, promotion, participant cap enforcement, and real-time settlement — is inherently agent-shaped. On the Akka Agentic AI Platform, each contest becomes a governed agent that autonomously manages its lifecycle: promoting to the right users, enforcing participant limits with transactional guarantees, adjusting pricing in real time, and settling results the moment the sporting event concludes.
With durable state and event sourcing, every decision is auditable — critical for a platform handling real money at scale. The same infrastructure that handles 30,000 joins per second can power personalized AI agents that analyze user preferences, optimize contest recommendations, and deliver individualized experiences to 80 million users. Enterprises build on the Akka Agentic AI Platform directly, or have a system delivered and operated through Akka Specify.
